By Melody Lyons

The Fayum Art is a kind of art that has been dated way back from centuries ago. It is originally from Egypt and is basically a portrait that has been done on a wooden template or on the linen shrouds. They are normally gotten on the mummies that have been buried. They are popularly known as mummy portraits.

Panel painting has been one of the oldest kinds of paintings that still have its relevance up to today. This is because of the good quality that it has. Their start has been traced to the period when the Roman rule had taken up Egypt. Its stylish nature is simply unmatched.

Having been buried deep in the ground for hundreds of years, one would expect that the pictures are gotten in some of the worst conditions. This is not the case since they usually look very good and well preserved. The high temperatures below help to maintain them. Those who have been mummified are usually gotten with the portraits placed on their faces.

The quality of the pictures is maintained through the different techniques that were applied during the painting process. The waxing method was most popular because of the outstanding results that it came up with. The colors usually maintain their shine.

It has been found out that the people in the paintings were some of the most influential people in the society back then. Most of the mummies that were extracted did not have them and when compared to those that were buried with masks, the numbers were extremely low. From them, it is possible to decipher the practices of the people back then and the styles that they had.

Many archaeologists have studied fayum art. They were able to get some of the pictures through extraction. Most of them have been preserved in archaeological centers and museums. They are a sight to behold.
