How To Choose Male Voice Over Talents

By Lila Bryant

People use voiceovers for many different types of production. Usually when people think of the term they think of advertising but equally they could be used to narrate documentaries, audio books and so forth. Sometimes there will be the need specifically for male voice over talents and therefore you need to be sure you have the right one.

As with any form of creative talent experience is usually a massive advantage. A more vocal talent is more likely to know where to position themselves when recording their audio. They are also more likely to know the kind of tone you want and so you are likely to spend less time doing takes as you try and get the right kind of tone.

Before you talk to someone about getting a vocalist you need to think about what your project is and who would be best suited to it. For example you may want to do a commercial about road safety. You may decide that the best way to get people aware of road safety is to use someone with theatrical training to make a dramatic message that will shock people into being more careful.

This then helps you to narrow down the options. Some artists are versatile and can achieve a wide range of vocals. Indeed this is especially useful when recording animated projects which require a wide range of characters but may not necessarily have the budget to provide actors for every individual character.

It sounds strange but different accents can often create different effects when people are listening. For example a British accent often gives something a feel of gravitas, especially if the person who is doing the recording has some form of theatrical training. There is also the tone. A deep voice can command more authority than someone with a lighter tone. However if the person is discussing a medical matter then you may want someone with a lighter voice who sounds more sympathetic to the listener. If you are contacting an agency you should give them a clear brief about this.

In either instance you need to get an audio sample. This will give you the opportunity to listen carefully to decide if their vocal tone works for what you want to do. It is also a good opportunity to check if they are technically aware and if the equipment they are using is of the best possible quality. Play it through a number of times so you can gauge the effectiveness of the sample.

This becomes especially important if you are looking for someone away from your local area who cannot come in and record at your own studio. You need to be sure that the person who is doing the recording is technically aware and will provide recordings that are usable.

You can find numerous agencies and independent artists online. Ideally you should check with a number of them in order to compare what they have to offer. This is both in terms of price and the quality of their work. Use your regular search engine for more information as well as getting feedback from clients who have used their services in the past in order to find the best vocal talent for your project.
